Misurata | December 31, 2025 – The Faculty of Arts at Misurata University organized the International Geographic Information Systems Day (GIS Day) activities today, Wednesday, at the faculty`s conference hall. Held under the theme "Modern Geospatial Technologies and Their Scientific Applications," the event saw a distinguished attendance of academics, specialists, and interested professionals, aiming to keep pace with the latest global technologies and bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application.
The event featured valuable scientific lectures that combined theoretical foundations with technical advancements. Ms. Zainab Melitan presented a research paper discussing the scientific principles of GIS and its pivotal role in spatial data analysis to support decision-making. She also reviewed the evolution of these systems over the decades, starting from the 1960s through to the revolution of desktop software and advanced graphical interfaces in the 1990s.
In addition, Dr. Abdulaziz Maiteeq explored modern practical applications, highlighting the integration between Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology, and high-precision ground surveying (GPS RTK) in data collection. He explained the mechanisms for producing high-accuracy 3D maps and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), which enhance the efficiency of contemporary spatial studies in generating essential data for urban planning development and assessing unauthorized (off-plan) construction, opening new horizons for scientific research.
