
Misrata | The Department of Medical Genetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Misrata University, concluded its scientific symposium on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and its applications in research and diagnostic fields on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The symposium, held in the lecture hall of the Faculty of Arts, was attended by a number of specialists, interested parties, and representatives from health and research institutions and centers.
The symposium marked the culmination of a specialized scientific and training program organized by the Department of Medical Genetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences. This program included intensive laboratory training on the Illumina MiSeq platform, with the practical component taking place from August 16 to 19, 2026.
During the program, participants received training on the various stages of NGS technology, from preparing samples and genetic libraries, through sequencing using the MiSeq platform, to reading and analyzing the resulting data, with practical application on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in samples related to breast cancer cases.
The symposium highlighted the importance of modern gene sequencing technologies in the fields of oncology, genetic diseases, molecular diagnostics, and precision medicine, and their role in detecting genetic changes that may contribute to understanding the disease and supporting medical and therapeutic decisions according to established guidelines.
The program is organized as part of Misrata University`s efforts to build scientific capacity, develop national talent, and enhance the use of modern molecular technologies, contributing to the localization of NGS technology and the advancement of scientific research and molecular diagnostics.
